Hello Maja Design fans and friends!   Nancy Hanttula here again, and I am still on an Art Journaling kick.  Lots of heavy hearted stuff going on in the Hanttula household at the moment, and one of the only ways I can de-stress is to art journal.  So, without going into a whole lot of personal details,  (any and all prayers are so appreciated), I would like to share my latest art journaling endeavor.

Time

I used the gorgeous Vintage Autumn Basics paper collection for my background  papers.

Vintage-Autumn-Basics

I know I have said it before, but I just have to say it again……if you haven’t tried your hand at Art Journaling, I highly urge you to give it a try.  There are no rules.  It is what you make it.  It can be used to experiment with new techniques.  It can be used to pour out your heart and soul. It is quite amazing how cathartic writing down your thoughts can truly be.  But,really, It can be exactly what YOU need it to be.

art journal

Some Art Journaling instructors have said to skip the first pages of your Art Journal.  Maybe some people find the first pages to be just too overwhelming, maybe a bit too “blank”.  Maybe some “fear” messing them up.  Really…you cannot mess up art journaling.  It can be a legacy of who you truly are that will be left behind. or  You can document something so personal that you absolutely cannot share it with anyone else…and then cover it up with layers of paint and ink. What IF it was the most freeing art experience you ever had.   What IF?

So where do you begin?  Quite simply, you can art journal in almost anything….an old book, even a super inexpensive spiral notebook.  The book I used here is a 7 x 10 mixed media art book from Canson.  I like this type of book because the papers are heavy duty and you can get the book in a variety of sizes.

choose your papers

First, I chose the papers I wanted to use on my background.

use wax paper

I placed them down before adhering them to get a feel for placement.  I placed wax paper in between the pages to protect the pages before and after these 2 pages from sticking together.  I adhered them down using Liquitex Matte gel, but other mediums that work well for this include regular school glue, Mod Podge, Decoupage, & Liquitex Matte Medium (but dang that stuff is pricIey.)

let them overhang

Don’t worry if some of your background paper overhangs a bit after you glue it down.  Once it is dry, just turn the paper over and cut the excess paper off from the back using the back of the page as a guide.

once dry cut off the overhang

Once the background paper was glued down….and dried, I, then,  inked the edges of the papers- I used Prima/Ingivld’s chalk ink in Black Coal.  I also added some quick doodles using a black permanent pen, and added some Tim Holtz Distress Stain in Peacock Feathers to the edges of the paper.

adding inking and distress stain

I love to look around for untraditional ephemera or embellishments to use on or in my art.  For this project I used a gift bag that I bought at our local Dollar Tree store (everthing is a dollar in that store…..I love to go through it and look for untraditional embellishments 🙂 ). I bought this bag (and few more actually)

gift bag embellishment

and I decided to fussy-cut the bird out of the bag’s design to use on the page. But before I glued down the bird and branches, I dry-brushed some acrylic paint in “skin-tone” color onto the background of the pages.

embellish

I glued the bird down with the Liquitex Matte gel.

screen print style stencils

Next, I used a Zip Screen screen print/stencil from Hirschberg Schutz & Co. (I bought at Walmart.) and stenciled down the butterflies using purple acrylic paint.

purple acrylic paint

I added a bit more acrylic paint using some Tim Holtz Acrylic paint dabbers in Aqua and Sunshine Yellow…and then finished off with my journaling all over the page.

journaling

I love to outline images on my pages by journaling around them.

finished pages

I hope this has inspired you to try your hand at some Art Journaling.  It has been a blessing in my life, that is for certain…..and I wish all such blessings to all of you.

The large grandfather’s clock in the library has just chimed six o’clock. The deep sound has started to fade away while the Autumn darkness spreads its wings. Some heritage photos lie on the heavy library table together with grandmother’s old books and grandfather’s music papers. Memories of a time gone by.
The quiet, peaceful Autumn is a time to reflect and capture your memories. Sit by the window and see how nature is slowly going to sleep, all while you are scrapping your best memories from the past.
Vintage Autumn Basics is the third ‘Basics Collection’ in the series. The colours reflect this twilight time of year, but are still mixable with the other Basics collections. These papers have been designed to enhance your family’s treasured memories and
strong heritage, but with a reminder to live in the present.
The collection contains 24 double-sided patterned sheets, one die-cut sheet included, and are also available as a 6×6 paper pad. Enjoy!

Good morning!
I am hoping you are all well. Today I am keeping my post a little short. Life is very very busy here and as you all know I have my beautiful 3 daughters to look after who all still need me very very much on a daily basis.
So I am very happy to create and very happy to share here but not every post will be as detailed as before. I hope you do understand..
Anyway, here is a layout I created for Maja Design using their Vintage Autumn Basics collection

“Hello”

This is myself and my eldest daughter at Sea World in Queensland in January .

Here are some close ups. I started with the “NoXIII” paper, and built my layers up from that using a mixture of Distress Stains, Distress Paints and inks.

Hello Maja Design fans and friends!  Nancy Hanttula here, and I am back again.  This week I would like to share some art journaling pages I have created using the Vintage Autumn Basics paper collection.

Vintage-Autumn-Basics

Art Journaling is very grounding and creatively inspiring for me.  And I find that when I need a true creative outlet and focus, the best thing for me to do to re-center myself is to break out my art journals.  I bought this book by Pam Carriker a while back called, “Creating Art at the speed of Life” and it has been calling to me for quite some time.  So I challenged myself to crack open this art journaling adventure and use Maja Design papers for my backgrounds.  Well, I really didn’t expect it to be as easy as it turned out to be.  The amazing patterns on the Vintage Autumn Basics papers were absolutely perfect…and it wasn’t hard for me to choose the papers I wanted to use.

wet surface and distress stainOver the course of a week, I created 6 art journaling pages…all with lessons outlined in the book….and although many layers and colors were added to the original papers, what I loved the most is how amazing the gorgeous papers held up to the wet mediums I explored and how awesome the prints added to the over-all texture, dimension, and interest to the pages.  I know that each one of the pages simply would not have been the same had I created them on simple watercolor paper.

My first 2 pages were created using the Vintage Autumn Basics papers No. XXI and No. X.  I glued them down to my art journaling book pages using decoupage glue.

Before pages 1 & 2

Here are the pages after:

Pages 1 & 2

My 3rd and 4th pages were created using the same paper collection, papers No. XVI & No. XIII.

Here are the pages after:

After pages 2 & 3

And the last 2 pages I created during this art journaling marathon, I used the papers No. XIII & No. XVIII.

And here are the pages after:

After Pages 5 & 6

If you have not tried your hand at art journaling, I highly recommend it.  There isn’t a right or a wrong way to art journal.  It is your perfect opportunity to try new techniques and mediums.  It is the perfect place to jot down ideas for future projects, record favorite quotes, preserve words of wisdom, or tell your true secrets.  AND, you won’t find better patterned papers to explore your art journaling endeavors than with the Maja Design papers. The papers are thick enough to handle repeated wet medium applications, glue, layering, stamping, image transfers, and the like.

Other supplies used here included:  Sharpie white paint pens in various sizes; Pan Pastels; Tim Holtz butterfly tissue paper, Decoupage glue Faber-Castell Pitt pens in various sizes all black India ink; ephemera from my stash; Bic permanent markers in various colors; Scarlet Lime permanent black pens; Neocolor II watercolor crayons; & chalkboard stickers from Michaels.

Until next time, I wish you all a super creative day!

Happy New Year!  Hello, Maja Design fans and friends!  Nancy Hanttula here….back again, and super excited to be on the Maja Design Creative Team for 2014.  I am so humbled to be amongst some of the greatest paper crafting industry “celebrities.”  The ladies on this team are just that, paper crafting superstars!  and I know we all have a whole lot of amazing projects to share with you during 2014!  So, if you haven’t signed up to receive the Maja Design blog posts (delivered directly to your e-mail inbox) you better do it now…you are not going to want to miss the daily inspiration this blog has to offer!

Today I would like to share with you a layout I created for my dear friend and cousin, using the gorgeous Vintage Autumn Basics paper collection, along with a little Vintage Spring Basics.

pretty baby

When I saw this darling photo of baby Eden, I knew the Vintage Autumn Basics paper collection would be perfect to capture the whimsical feel of the photo.

Eden

AND, because I am not one to ever waste a scrap of paper left over from any other project, I also used Vintage Spring Basics (7th of April) in my design.  I had punched some little folk shaped hearts, and used the piece of paper I used to punch them out.  The other piece of Vintage Spring Basics paper I used here (1st of May) can be seen layered on top of the background paper.

using scraps

The laser cut cardstock doilies are from Gina’s Designs.  Because they were a solid white, I didn’t want them to get lost on the page (they are so beautifully delicate), so using a black permanent pen, I colored them black, but only in the lighter parts of the page where they blended into the lighter backgrounds.

doily detail 2

So actually, they are black and white.

I also hand-cut out some roses to embellish my design.  I cut the roses from the beautiful Vintage Autumn Basics paper, No. II.  Using some adherent foam, I raised them at different levels to add dimension.

hand-cut roses

Vintage Autumn Basics papers used for this layout included:  No. XVII (background); No. VI (clover-leaf type flower strip); No. II (rose border strip); No. IV (striped punched border); & No. II (hand-cut roses).

Vintage-Autumn-Basics

Vintage Spring Basics papers used for this included:  1st of May (2nd layer placed over the background paper); 7th of April (punched heart border piece).

Other supplies used here included:  Martha Stewart black lace; Martha Stewart deep edge border punch; butterflies from Reneabouquets; laser-cut cardstock doilies from Gina’s Designs; cameo from BoBunny; bling from Zva Creative, “adorable” sticker from Teresa Collins.

Thanks for looking!  and CHEERS to a wonderfully creative 2014!

Hugs!
