Your Time to Shine – Vintage Summer Basics

Hello Maja Design fans and friends!  It’s Nancy Hanttula here again.  This week I am sharing a layout I created for a friend of mine, using the gorgeous Vintage Summer Basics paper collection.

Vintage-Summer-Basics-P1

I am not sure how it works in many parts of the world….but here in the United States, it is that time of year when all of the Seniors in High School are preparing to graduate.  A friend of mine asked me to create a layout for her daughter’s best friend, as part of a graduation present.  Well, actually, she gave me a bunch of pictures she wanted me to scrapbook for her, and this is just the first one I have finished.

Your time to shine

Believe it or not, I like to create layouts using others peoples photos.  Sometimes I just need a fresh perspective, or maybe it’s just a new subject.  Whatevever it is, I thoroughly enjoyed creating this page.

After I chose my background papers,  I added some texture using modeling paste and a Prima stencil.

background texture and stenciling

After the modeling paste dried, I wanted to use a piece of lace from my stash, but I wanted to back it with some paper…..I glued the lace down onto the Vintage Summer Basics back-side of the paper “1903”.

backing the lace with paper

Then I cut it out and layered it onto the page.

lace on background

After gluing on the photo, I layered a big transparent clock from Kaisercraft onto the photo.  I don’t know about you, but I have this huge collection of transparencies that I seldom even think of to use.  So, in my effort to use more of my hugely amassed craft supply “stash” – and so that I don’t end up on the show “Hoarders” one day 🙂 , here is an effort to use some of my transparencies.

details

I tucked some pink paper streamers (cut in half and bunched together) and glued them down just under the outer edges of the large transparent clock.

details 2

I also tucked some lace just underneath the bottom edge of the 2nd background layer.

layering lace

There are a lot of layers to this piece that are hard to see in a photo taken from the front.

multiple layers

Specific Vintage Summer Basics papers used in this layout included:  “1910”; “Minner-Memories”; & “1903” front and back.

Other supplies used for this project included:  Prima/Ingvild Chalk Ink in Dry Sand, Vintage Pink, & Dark Bark; ribbon and lace from my stash; Prima flourish stencil; Liquitex modeling paste; Kaisercraft clock face transparency (large); small frosted transparencies from Michaels; brads from Recollections/Michaels; roses from Michaels; adhesive pearls from Prima; Aleene’s Tacky Glue; Tombow Permanent adhesive; pink paper streamer from my stash; Chalkboard vinyl title from Recollections/Michaels; white Craft Smart chalk marker & chipboard flourish from Dusty Attic.

Thanks for looking!  I hope something here has inspired you to create something amazing today! Hugs,

Hello Maja Design fans and friends!  Nancy Hanttula here again, this time to share a layout, I created for my mom to give to her on Mother’s Day.

Grandpa & Grandma

I used the gorgeous Vintage Spring Basics paper collection.

Vintage-Springr-Basics-P1

This is a photo of my maternal grandparents when they were young.  I have been wanting to create a special layout using this photo for quite some time…specifically for my mom.  And since she seldom (if ever) gets on-line to see my work, I feel quite safe that she won’t even see this until I can get it framed and wrapped up nicely for her on Mother’s day.

ticket

I dug deep into my stash for the embellishments I used on this.  I covered a large chipboard circle that I have had for years (from Close to my Heart) with the paper “7th of April” …. then glued on brown ribbon, twirled loops of twine, flowers from Prima, Petaloo and Michaels, then added some extra bling with some bling brads from Creative Charms.

twine bow

I added some texture by using modeling paste mixed with Apple Barrel acrylic paint in Flame Yellow to a Prima stencil on the upper left and lower right sides of the layout.

texture

I framed the little bird that was already on the background paper, “1st of April”, with a little metal frame from Maya Road.  I also layered some washi tape from Recollections in this corner in a little lacy brown and floral design.

framed bird

I added some heart stamping using one of my little stampabilities wood mounted stamps.

stamped hearts

I added some metal brad/buttons from Making Memories, layered over some inked up carnival tickets.

metal buttons

The pretty little purple flower sticker is from K & Co, and I added a little scrap I had punched for another project next to it (punched from Sommartider paper collection, paper, “Iskall saft” -bs). I also added some little fancy stick pins next to the flower.

flower and lattice

I wove threads of pearls in and around the flowers of the circle, and bunched up and glued some animal print ribbon from Anna Griffin.

embellished circle

Specific papers used for this project included: Paper Collection Vintage Spring Basics:  papers:  1st of April; 1st of March – bs;  & 7th of April; and Sommartider paper collection:  Iskall saft – bs.

Other supplies used but not already mentioned above, included:  Tombow permanent adhesive; hot glue; Prima’s chalk ink/Ingvild in Shabby Tote, Coltsfoot, & Branch Bark; Martha Stewart border punch; Liquitex Modeling paste; burlap fabric; & cheesecloth.

Thanks for looking!  I hope that something here has inspired you to create something amazing today! Hugs,

Welcome Spring – Vintage Spring Basics

Hello Maja Design fans and friends!  Nancy Hanttula here again to share my latest project….once again using the spring-time beauty of the Vintage Spring Basics paper collection.

Vintage-Springr-Basics-P1

I just cannot help it.  It is that time of year when all I want to do is surround myself with sunshine and tulips.  Matter of fact, 11 years ago this very day, I was in Ireland on my honeymoon, literally surrounded by tulips. Maybe that is what has me pining so much for tulips. Well, here is a wall-hanging that I created to “Welcome Spring” to my house.

Welcome Spring 2

I have had my mind on creating a paper creation using an embroidery hoop for a very long time now.  This particular embroidery hoop is approximately 10 1/2 inches wide and I bought it at my local Walmart.  I just loved the bright pink color.

embroidery hoop

The most important step to getting your paper to go safely (and tightly) inside of the embroidery hoop is to wet the paper on both sides BEFORE you even attempt at putting it into the hoop.  The water releases the surface tension of the paper and allows it to bend and curve to fit into the hoop. Take your time with this step and don’t worry if there are a few bends and wrinkles.  When the paper dries, most of the bends and wrinkles will flatten out of the paper and it will lie perfectly flat.

wetting the paper

After getting my paper into the embroidery hoop, I began to construct my birdhouse.

beginning the birdhouse

After deciding the papers I wanted to use, I stitched borders around the pieces.  I have always been a big fan of hand-sewing on my projects.  There is something very therapeutic to hand-sewing … well, actually, it is quite similar to how therapeutic the whole crafting process is for me. I imagine that many of you can relate to that feeling as well.

stitching the birdhouse

Once my house was created and glued down, I constructed the base….

base of the birdhouse

and then the roof….

roof of the birdhouse

and then the really fun part began.

eggs

I created my bird using a stamp from Hero Arts.  The wing of the bird was created by cutting a butterfly (from Michaels) in half.  I added a few dimensional details to the bird using my Perfect Pearls pen.

bird

I added some fun trims …the green from Webster’s Pages and all of the others just from my stash.

trimmings

I lightly sketched some swirls with pencil….pierced some holes…and then stitched them in using green embroidery floss onto the background.

stitched swirls

I lined my birdhouse’s roof by stitching on buttons in various colors and then added my “Spring” banner.

banner

I added some fun colored feathers and a chipboard leaf flourish.  I painted the chipboard piece with gesso and then stamped it with a script stamp from Stampabilities.

feathers

I added some fun flowers from Prima, Sassafras Lass, and some I cut from the 3rd of March, Vintage Spring Basics paper.

butterfly wings

Specific Vintage Spring Basics papers used for this project included:  5th of March; 3rd of March (bs); 1st of March (bs); 7th of May (bs); 4th of March; 3rd of March; & 6th of March.

Other supplies used for this project included:  10 1/2 inch pink embroidery hoop from Walmart; ribbon/trim from Webster’s pages and my personal stash; buttons from my personal stash, Jaylynn embroidery floss; paper piercer from Timeless Touches; flowers from Prima, Sassafras Lass, & Petaloo; stamps from Stampabilities and Hero Arts; butterfly from Michaels; feathers from my personal stash; & small alpha stichers from the Girls Paperie.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you create something amazing today! Hugs!

The Versatality of Vintage Spring Basics

Hello Maja Design fans and friends!  Nancy Hanttula here with you again.  Today, I would like to show you just how versatile the Maja Design paper collections truly are.  I have created 4 different cards…all very distinctly different….but all from the very same paper collection, Vintage Spring Basics.

Vintage-Springr-Basics-P1

I will show you each finished card first, and then I will share all the little details and “love” that I put into each and every one.  So, without further ado, here is the first card. I fondly refer to it as “The Cupcake.”

cupcake

And the 2nd card, I call “Butterflies.”

Butterflies

The 3rd card, I refer to as “Groove Thang.”

groove thang 2

and finally, the last card, I call “Blessings.”

blessings

As you can see, every card has a very different style (I do like to change things up.)

For “The Cupcake” card, my inspiration was a card that I saw while perusing a magazine at Hobby Lobby in one of the magazines.  I didn’t make note of the magazine, but I did make note of the card maker (Sherry Wright)….I was enthralled by how she used buttons to make the frosting of her cupcake and had to dive into my vast stash of buttons to create my own cupcake masterpiece.

buttons

To create the little flag, I simply cut a banner out of the back-side print of the 7th of May, dampened the paper and wrapped it/glued it around a toothpick.  I hand-printed the lettering in brown ink.

cupcake sm

I also did a bit of dimensional stenciling using some Liquitex modeling paste mixed with pink acrylic paint and added some stars to the corners.

details sm

I then added a light touch of background stamping and touch of acrylic paint here and there, some doodling and shading around the cupcake base, and some hand-sewn border stitching along the edges.  I topped off the piece with a strip of brown pom-pom trim.

cupcake

For the “Butterflies” card, I started out by using the paper 9th of April.  I then added some dimensional stenciling (again with some Liquitex modeling paste and a stencil by The Crafter’s Workshop of the harlequin pattern.)

background dimension

I then stamped the harlequin pattern with the Stampabilities stamp, “Faded Text.”

background stamping

I did the same basic modeling paste stencil technique with the heart, using one of my stencils from my stash.  I mixed the modeling paste with a darker purple acrylic paint.

heart

I cut out all of the little butterflies from the 6th of May paper, and adhered them with glue.  I wanted them to look like they were flying up off the card.

flying

The 3rd card, “Groove Thang” was created using a wax crayon resist technique.  I bought the wax crayon from my local art supply store.  It applies completely clear.  I drew on a scribbled background pattern onto the backside print of 8th of March paper, then sprayed on “Cheshire Cat Cherry” spray mist from Lindy’s Stamp gang.  The wax completely resists the mist.

wax resist

I then used a fun Dina Wakely silhouette stencil from The Crafter’s Workshop……I used a combination of Black archival ink from Ranger and Black India ink from a Faber-Castell pen (both of which the wax also resists.)

details2 sm

The star strip was a piece of scrap that I had used from another project to punch out some stars.  I doodled around the stars using various widths of my black pens.

stars2 sm

I added some dimensional stenciled stars using the same stencil that I used in my cupcake card.

details3 sm

The number ephemera strips are actually pieces of tags that my husbands dry-cleaning comes home with….I make him save them for me.  I love collecting ephemera for my projects…especially things with numbers on them.

details5 sm

I added a bit of stitching here and there

stitches sm

and considered the card finished.  I wrote on the outside of the card…” never too old to shake your groove thang…happy birthday” – I thought it was appropriate for the fun silhouette that made me think of dancing.

groove thang 2

And the last card, “Blessings” was put together rather easily.  I photographed the steps so that you could see how easy a card can come together.  AND, I don’t know about you, but because my friends and family know that I am a crafter, especially a paper crafter, they tend to expect a hand-made card, so, with that in mind, here is how easily it can be done.

#1  I put down my base layer and inked the edges.  I decided to add some polka-dots using a gelato and a stencil.

gelatos 2

#2  I hand tore a layer, inked the edges and glued it down.

step 2

#3  I layered on a piece of ribbon.

step 3

#4  I cut out another layer and glued it down.

step 4

#5  I chose some pretty red Petaloo flowers, arranged them how I wanted them, then glued them down.

step 5

#6  I chose a flourish rub-on and applied it to the center.

step 6

#7  I needed a little extra something in the top right corner, so I tore another little strip of paper and added another little Petaloo flower.

step 7-8

#8 Above you can see how I hand-stitched a pretty red border to match the flowers around the edges of the card.

#9  And then finally, I added a rub-on sentiment,  and voila, another finished card to have on hand to give to a friend or family member.
